Thomas Weaver (1774-1843)
Mr Corbett on a bay Hunter out shooting with two pointers in an extensive landscape
Signed and dated 1809, oil on canvas, 47cm by 64cm

Provenance: Christie's London, 28th May 1999, Lot 24 (£14,950)
See illustration

Sold for £6,000
Estimated at £2,500 - £3,500

In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and revarnished. The paint is lightly thin and surface somewhat flat in places. Much of the top hat worn by the gentleman is strengthened. The old cracquelure generally throughout his attire (excluding lower left hand leg) has been infilled. The definition of his arm has also been strengthened, together with the outline of the shotgun and general consistent infilling to the handle etc. There are further relatively minor re-touches to the horses neck, with more sporadic and relatively delicate touches to the body and hind legs and somewhat more consistently around the front legs and feet of the horse. There is a patch of re-touching to possible old damage between the front legs of the horse and dogs approx 1 cm at the widest point and 3cms in length. Re-touching to the shadow around the right hand side hound and hind quarters, the belly of the left hand side dog and a larger area around its head. Further fairly consistent re-touching to the background above the dogs and the background in general. etc. Signature and date probably strengthened. Fine stable (fairly evident) cracquelure throughout. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Some white mould to the reverse which is not impacting on the painting.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
