In fully restored condition re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished the varnish applied is seemingly blocking the ability to see any overpaint or restoration with a uv lamp. The top corners of the canvas are slightly stretched and buckled, the left hand side re-line is slightly coming away along the top edge approx 4cm from the far left hand corner. Odd superficial surface scratch and abrasion, there is visible re-touching along the top edge and a couple of small patches of re-touching above the sitters wig towards the top edge, one having a small loss. The definition around the leaves to the left of the sitter and shadows to the background are likely to have been strengthened as would some of the shadows and definitions of the hair and elements of the drapery. There is a patch of strengthening and overpaint to the right of his left hand arm and further re-touching towards the lower right hand corner with further strengthening to the outlines of his helmet. Surface of the paint slightly flat as a result of the restoration process, two circular areas of thin/rubbed paint with more apparent fine craquelure to the right of his hip in the lower right hand corner. Delicate re-touching to the table, the varnish has an opaque quality/bloom, mostly contained with in the lower left hand corner and edge. Two tiny paint losses on the table towards the left hand edge, fine to large sized stable craquelure throughout etc. In an overall fair condition.
