Sold for £3,500
Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000
In fully restored condition, re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished now with some dirt and discoloured varnish to the surface. The surface is some what flattened by the restoration process and the paint is slightly thin in places, the varnsih which has been used is potentially restricting the ability to see any restoration under a uv lamp. There is a cluster of relatively small patches of re-touching above the sitters head which is visible with the eye, the one closest to his wig having a minor horizontal loss to it. Elements of the shadowing and definition of his wig and the outline of the sitters face has been strengthened as has parts of the vegetation and leaves of the tree in the upper left hand corner, two further relatively small areas of re-touching visible with the eye towards the upper right hand corner, some of the areas of varnish have a slightly chalky quality/ bloom, fine to medium stable craquelure throughout. There is seemingly further patch of old restoration and over painting along the lower left hand edge against his sleeve and further elements of the drapery is likely to have had moderate strengthening. Overall fair condition.
