Figure in profile : Original canvas which is slightly loose on the stretcher and with a coarse weave. The shadowing, outline and and general background around the profile which is approx 3cms at the widest point is retouched and overpainted. There is a further patch of re-touching / overpainting within the lower right hand area and a few sporadic and small spots to the lower right hand area in general. There is a tear and associated hole to the canvas towards the upper right hand edge which is approx 0.5cms across. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish with odd minor surface abrasion mostly within the upper area. Fine cracquelure throughout which is especially prominent across the right hand side area of the head, hair and neck etc. which is essentially stable at present. Companion - in a comparable condition to the former in general. Reasonably sporadic and small scale re-touching throughout the hair on the right hand side of the sitter and face. There is a slightly more concentrated linear patch just left of the beard which is approx 7cms in entire length and further sporadic touches in general across the lower section. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Fine stable cracquelure which is more pronounced in places. Chalky nature to parts of varnish in places. Mild stretcher shadow. Odd superficial surface scratch/ abrasion overall. Reasonable to relatively good condition.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
