A Rare and Early "Explorer " Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed...

A Rare and Early "Explorer" Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed Rolex, model: Explorer, ref: 6150, 1953, lever movement signed and numbered 17749, black dial with luminous triangular, baton and Arabic numerals, gilt finished signature and minute track, Mercedes luminous hands, screw down crown, screw back numbered inside 6150 and dated IV53, case serial number 944768, 35mm wide see illustration

The reference 6150 is one of the rarest and earliest examples of the "Explorer" model. Some collectors refer to the reference as a "pre-Explorer" since it was only manufactured in 1953. The "pre explorer" dial was firstly marked "Precision" and like this example shows Rolex started after that signing the dial with "Explorer" in the early stages.
The explorer model was marketed and introduced firstly for adventurers and in particular mountain climbers. It was launched in 1953 to celebrate Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay's ascension of Mt. Everest, who wore Rolex Oyster Perpetual wristwatches during their historic climb.

Sold for £31,000
Estimated at £4,000 - £5,000
