John Ward of Hull produced a number of smaller compositional paintings of whaling ships around 1840, which may have acted as sketches in advance of his seminal work "William Lee in the Arctic" held by Hull Maritime Museum.
In 1996 Christie's, London, sold another outstanding example based on the same theme - "The Northern Whale Fishery - The Swan and Isabella" which realised £176,000 and became part of the collection at the National Gallery, Canada.

Provenance: Purchased by the current vendor's father in Scarborough, circa 60 years ago

Unlined. Small repair to the reverse of each canvas approximate centre with delicate associated re-touching to the front. Stable to small to medium sized cracquelure across surface.
