The weavers of Heriz are rightly famous for their excellent large wool piled carpets made with outstanding dyes. During the last quarter of the 19th century small numbers of fine silk jugs (usually as here in prayer format) were produced in the region on a cottage industry basis. Typical of Heriz silk rugs this example is made on a silk foundation with excellent quality silk used in the pile. The knot count is high. By 1900 silk rug weaving ceased in the region.

Both plain ivory outer guard stripes remain. Both the selvedges remain and have been delicately overbound. Pile is in fair condition for a rug of this age. There are small areas where the foundation is visible. There is an old repair in the upper outer guard stripe and the rug has a linen band approx 6cm wide neatly sewn to the sides and ends. The rug appears soft and has been tested in several places. No splits/cracking were seen/heard. 070214
