Self-promotion for Wedderburn (seemingly at the expense of the defendant Smith), posing as champion of the individual against powerful interests. Wedderburn became Lord Chancellor in 1793. The case, concerning disputed ownership claims to a lead mine in Swaledale by George Fermor, Earl of Pomfret, was tried first at York, in 1770. A rare tract
