BCP
Book of Common Prayer. Sold by Thomas Guy at the Oxford Armes On the West side of the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, [16]87 (87 etched onto title page plate, but vide infra). 4to, full red crushed morocco, boards with central gilt panels with floral corner-pieces, sometime rebacked, morocco lettering-piece, gilt roll-tooled board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, t.e.g.; unpaginated, signed: a4-b4, A6-M6, N1, 2A6-2I6, 2K2, 2L4-2N4 (continuous according to catchwords); eng. title, floriated initials, head- and tail-pieces.
Although the added "87" on the title-page is suggestive of date, the prayers for Their Majesties and for the Royal Family are for "King William and Queen Mary" and "Catherine, the Queen Dowager" and "Her Royal Highness the Princess Anne of Denmark". This dates the printing to after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and likely to 1689 when this form seems to have become official. It is possible that the text for such sections was simply reset and re-printed, whilst the title-page plate was left unaltered. Interestingly, this copy was a family copy (with numerous MSS details on the endpapers) and the Royal details have been furthered altered by hand to reflect the ascension of King George to the throne.

Sold for £170
Estimated at £150 - £200

Binding rubbed and scuffed but still handsome, minor staining to lower corners throughout not affecting text, short tear L6 affecting text, some v. slight, variable, worming to lower corners of 2F4-2K2 not affecting text, some pages toned, some foxing, creasing etc, otherwise a very good copy.
