Beze, Theodore de
Poemata varia. Geneva: J Stoer, 1599. 12mo, full contemporary calf; pp. xx, 207; 41 woodcuts to text, four woodcut borders, head- and tail-pieces and floriated initials. Although most of his life was devoted to ecclesiastical writing, de Beze's early life as a law student saw him hailed as one of the best writers of Latin poetry of the time. Beze revisted the poetry of his youth in his old age, excising from it the libertine, the crude and the ungodly (including a poem which drew the ire of the church for suggestions of homosexuality) which were seen as unfitting for the successor to Calvin. An interesting reminder of the libertine youth of a man usually remembered as a pillar of the Genevan church - and of old age's desire to re-construct the past into a more fitting memorial. (See Lots 2+3 for the Englishing of his NT)

Sold for £200

Binding a little rubbed and scuffed with small loss to lower board but generally clean internally barring some marking and spotting, a very good copy.
