Whitaker, 1792. 8vo, later bound in cloth-backed boards with paper label to spine; pp. [26 (title, verso blank, Preface (4), Contents (20)], 451, [1 (blank)] (lacking pp. 253-8); eng. port. frontis., 12 Bills of Fare, one plate (on carving), 7 pages letter-press tables to text. The authors (Principal Cooks at the Crown and Anchor on the Strand) did not intend to "ransack the Annals of Antiquity, with a View to discover what was the food of our first Parents in the Garden of Eden" but simply wanted to contribute to the Culinary Science, which they felt had, in their age, reached "a very high Degree of Perfection."
