Laurence Stephen Lowry RA (1887-1976)
"Thoughtful Man"
Signed and dated 1966, pencil, drawn on Seaburn Hotel writing paper, 20cm by 12cm

Provenance: Gifted by the artist to Simon Marshall in 1966
The Stone Gallery, Burford

During the 1960's and 70's Lowry frequently took up residence at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland. He was great friends with the Marshall family who owned the Stone Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Simon Marshall regularly ferried him along the North East coast where he would collect material for his pictures, preferring to finish them at home from memory.
In an interview with the Independent in 2013 Simon Marshall stated of Lowry; "Over the years I must have driven him thousands and thousands of miles; to Holy Island, Gretna Green and Portpatrick, where he believed his ancestors came from. I very rarely saw him sketch or work outside."
"Although he carried a wallet with bits of paper in and might draw something on an envelope as we walked around, he mostly liked to work at home. He was absorbing things as we went, and would then appear at some later stage with a drawing of a place we'd been to, done from memory."
Lowry often sketched on receipts, envelopes and the hotel writing paper. He is reputed to have been a generous man who often gifted works to friends, the hotel workers and even people he met on the street.
