A Rare 18th Century Printed Fan Entitled ''The General Idea of Sciences''. The double paper leaf is

A Rare 18th Century Printed Fan Entitled "The General Idea of Sciences". The double paper leaf is mounted on plain wood, the gorge sticks a light wood, the guards dyed slightly darker and the upper guards painted in colour, most likely a later addition. The fan covers instruction on the following subjects, spelt here as printed: Human learning; Philosophy: Logick; Morality; Metaphysicks; Physicks; Medecine and Surgery; Pharmacy; Chymistry; Astronomy; The Sphere; Architecture; Drawing; Geometry; Heraldry; Politics; Enginry; Naval; Horsemanship; Agriculture; Economy. A border of leaves, bows and flowers runs along the top edge of the leaf. To the side of each subject are drawings representing the subject, such as a horse, a telescope, books, medical equipment, a sailing ship, a globe, and farming tools. The verso is plain. T/W a period pink card fan tube, with ink annotations which are indecipherable. Not in the Schreiber collection. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 26cm

Other than the later paint decorating the upper guards, the fan is in good order and retains good colour. The verso is marked with black, which does not come through to the recto. Very light staining can be seen on the recto from the left for approximately the first two folds.
