A Fine Fan by Alexandre, circa 1880, believed to have belonged to the Infanta Maria de la Paz...

A Fine Fan by Alexandre, circa 1880, believed to have belonged to the Infanta Maria de la Paz (1862-1948), daughter of Queen Isabella II of Spain and her husband Francisco. In 1880 The Infanta married her first cousin, Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria, a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Wittelsbach and a General of Cavalry. Following the marriage, the couple lived outside Munich in the Nymphenburg Palace. The couple visited Paris on their way to Munich which presents the possibility of the fan being purchased then. The double velum leaf, painted with a charming and amusing scene of a wealthy couple in fine costume taking tea in the garden, the lady reading a letter, younger family members noting that the gentleman is snoozing and tickling him with a flower to rouse him from slumber. A further group of adults, possibly including clergy, are in discussion to the side. A stream and woodland next to a fine country house complete the scene. Signed M de Garay in red on the recto, bottom left, the leaf is mounted on carved and pierced blond tortoiseshell sticks. The upper guard has a panel left plain for a monogram. The verso is painted with PAZ underneath a coronet and is inscribed "Alexandre" to the left border. Guard length 11.75 inches or 30cm. Together with a lilac silk covered hinged fan box, lined with lilac, the interior of the lid stamped with a scrolling design in gold that could contain the word "éventail" and perhaps more, but is hard to distinguish

Provenance: Lot 774 in Sotheby's sale in Amsterdam entitled "Of Noble and Royal Descent ...", held on 18th-20th February, achieving a hammer price of 3317,00 euros

Sold for £1,900
Estimated at £1,000 - £3,000

Superb detail to the costumes including the quilting to the petticoat worn by the lady to the left. Light wear to the folds. Some brown staining to the verso. The exterior silk of the box has faded in comparison to the strong interior colour
