A Third Quarter 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks pierced and the upper guards carved with flowers, this section painted in soft blue, pink and green and backed with cerise foil. The lower gorge sticks are painted with delicate pink flowers, almost certainly at a later date. The double paper leaf has several panels. The largest showing a shepherdess accompanied by a lady holding a fan, a small boy playing a pipe to the right. Elsewhere, two vignettes are painted with cherubs holding flaming torches aloft whilst seated on clouds, and to the far sides of the leaf are courting couples. The verso has the air of an earlier fan, with exquisitely detailed flower posies, painted with auriculas, parrot tulips, roses, Turk's cap lilies, peonies and foliage, insects and butterflies arriving for the pollen. Contained in a silk fan sleeve woven with flowers and embroidered with sequins, with drawstring. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm (2)

Purchased from Christie's SK on 9th July 1985 in a sale of fans entitled "Property of a lady". No hammer price noted but then estimated at £100 to £200

Sold for £480
Estimated at £150 - £300

Good, slight wear to verso paper on the left guard
