A Circa 1760's Ivory Fan, the monture pierced, gilded and attractively painted, the gorge with bright turquoise, softer green and touches of other colours, serving to draw the eye to the carved cherubs and bowls of fruit in the centre. The gorge is further decorated with tiny iridescent shapes and parts are backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The head is well shaped, seen when open. The double paper leaf is painted with a rather imaginative garden, formed with arbours and statues. A makeshift tent provides shade whilst several activities are undertaken. A lady with a parasol holds a doll puppet; a lady wearing a laced stomacher is fanned by the gentleman who admires her; another gentleman attempts to purchase flowers from a maid who appears to have obtained his tricorn hat, in front of a shell fountain and a dolphin statue. And to the left, a servant prepares to bring liquid refreshment on a tray. The verso, the reserves painted with exotic flowers, shows two country boys playing bowls. Guard length10.5 inches or 26.5cm

Purchased at Christie's SK on October 23rd 1979.

Sold for £280
Estimated at £250 - £500

The paint is almost rubbed away on the upper guards. Some rubbing to the folds. Backing MOP has losses.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
