A Neo-Classical Fan, circa 1790, the gorge of ivory, the guards worked in a gold metal, the upper sections incised and set with paste in regular lines, the gorge sticks carved and pierced. The double stipple engraved silk leaf is extensively embroidered with tiny gold sequins, bordering a central cartouche showing classical maidens, Cupid with his bow, and other winged cherubs, probably a depiction of the toilet of Venus, and two side vignettes painted with ladies next to trees with winged cherubs in the shadows. Elsewhere there are four blue ovals in Wedgewood style, and sequins fill any reserves. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm

Purchased at Christie's SK on the 13th May 1980 for £150.00. According to the Christie's catalogue, the fan was believed to have belonged to Queen Caroline. The Queen, wife of George II, died in 1837. Queen Caroline, (b 1768), wife of the Prince Regent, was Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820 and nominally Queen 1820-21, George IV having refused to have her crowned.

Sold for £380
Estimated at £400 - £800

In a few minor areas the recto silk has perished but is well supported by both the verso layer and the propensity of sequins.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
