Queen Anne's Fan: A Mid to Late 18th Century Fan, with shaped wooden sticks painted with exotic figures, birds, vases and pavilions, the head fairly bulbous, the gorge sticks with smaller figures in detailed costume. The double paper leaf is painted with a chinoiserie scene of maidens in a garden. Unusually, the leaf is shaped at the top border, and tipped with peacock feathers which alternate with pointed, gilded motifs and painted faces or birds. The verso is vibrantly painted with flowers and insects, possibly a wasp, Iris, a butterfly, reeds and rocks. Together with a period paper covered card fan tube in mottled green marked inside "Queen Anne's fan". Guard length 11 inches or 28cm (2)

Purchased at Sotheby's on May 1st 1980, for £99.00, when the fan was dated to 1770.

This fan has caused much discussion in the past. It could well be from the Queen Anne period. Although it would be almost impossible to prove that it belonged to Queen Anne herself, it must be stated that the fan is of high quality, and quite exotic by design. Queen Anne reigned from 1702 to 1714.

Sold for £1,000
Estimated at £700 - £1,000

Slight losses to the feather tips. Some folds nicked to bottom border. Tube good.
