A Very Fine and Unusual Brussels Lace Fan, the leaf mounted on pierced and gilded...

A Very Fine and Unusual Brussels Lace Fan, the leaf mounted on pierced and gilded mother-of-pearl sticks, the pearl continuing to form the ribs, the monture from circa 1900 but the lace slightly earlier circa 1880's. The lace is central to a leaf which also consists of gauze painted with Violets and Forget Me Nots, giving a very light and airy appearance. The needlelace, of fine quality, is worked with a coat of arms, said to be those of the Princesse Annie de Lusignan. A handwritten note to this effect is present. The loop is of gold metal. Contained in a fitted fan box, the exterior of maroon leather. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm

Purchased at Christie's SK on 23rd October 1979 for £160.00

This fan was exhibited at the Royal Fans Exhibition at Harewood House near Leeds in June to September 1986. Catalogue reference No 160, page 63, describes the lace leaf as "worked with the arms of Lusignan surmounted by a crown and mantled".

Sold for £2,200
Estimated at £1,200 - £2,000

Slight splitting to some gauze folds, a very few small brown marks on the lace.
