Taylor was an English Divine, sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression. He is frequently cited as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language. He became chaplain-in-ordinary to Charles I, owing to the patronage of Laud (which became politically awkward after Laud's execution at the hands of the Parliamentarians. This work was likely written in semi-exile as private chaplain to the 2nd Earl of Carbery (to whom the book is dedicated). His careful attention to the music of his words, won him admirers such as Wesley, Coleridge and de Quincey.
