The Triton is a very happy marriage of Triumph twin power and Norton road holding that is rightly regarded by enthusiasts as the quintessential British "sports special" almost to the point of it being defined as the stereotypical café racer. This well-known, universal hybrid first emerged in the 1950s yet continues to be built around the world today, enjoying almost marque status.
The Norton Featherbed frame was regarded as the best handling item of the day, and the Triton rationale was to combine the "best engine" with the "best frame" by replacing the standard Norton engine with Triumph parallel twin engine. A popular engine choice was the Triumph Bonneville unit with twin carburettors and twin camshafts. This pushrod engine gave good performance and reliability and could be more easily tuned for greater power using high-profile camshafts, high compression pistons and twin carburettors. In due course, a Weslake 8-valve head became available for the Triumph motor.
The Triton, synonymous with the Mods and Rockers era has been a continuous symbol of teenage rebellion and 60 years after its conception the Triton is still the most celebrated British twin special, making its way into period meets and cafe race weekends.
Every example is unique depending on spares availability, tanks varied as did side panels and seats. This particular example is an extremely pleasing conglomeration of Norton Feather bed frame, Triumph 6T (Thunderbird unit) 650cc engine and slimline tank. On inspection this is very much an older build, dated 1969 on the V5 and with correct period fittings, this is a rare opportunity to purchase a proper Triton built at the time of the 'Rockers on Rockets'.
A very well presented cafe racer without the clip on bars making riding a more relaxed experience. Unusually this machine has a genuine aluminium slimline tank and not the common fibreglass tank that many later Tritons were fitted with.
Paintwork is extremely nice, chrome and stainless also presented well as are the engine casings and wheel rims, sitting on good tyres and period seat is in nice used condition.
Mechanically there is no record of works completed but runs sweetly and changes up and down the gears extremely well.
Tritons vary enormously depending on the owner's personal taste, this example is a very smart and well put together machine ready for the road with a tank of fresh fuel.
