Circa 1860 American Rose of Sharon Appliqué Quilt, worked on a white cotton ground, appliquéd with large red flower heads and green leaves (poison green fabric), within a red saw tooth border and green trim, quilted overall, made in Ohio,198cm by208cm
'Poison Green', in the second half of the 19th century there were many unexplained deaths in the home, which physicians believed came from the arsenic used in wallpapers to create vivid green pigments. It was also included in the fabric dyeing process to create fashionable dresses in green for the ladies and waistcoats and cravats for the gentlemen.
