Circa 1840 French Boutis Petassoun - Infant Lap Quilt, in white cotton decorated with a central basket of padded flowers surrounded by quartered zig zag corded detail, within a deep border of floral motifs within a scalloped border, of museum quality, 43cm by 55cm
Provenance: Jan Hassard Heritage Collection of Quilts – Part 1
This intricate style of corded and stuffed needlework was also known as Broderie de Marseille. It was made in professional ateliers in the 17th and 18th centuries in Marseille. Two layers of fabric were stitched together along the pattern lines, then cording or stuffing was inserted in the the pattern channels to raise the surface relief.
