17th Century Dutch/Flemish Small Needlework Panel, depicting a lady and gent, he dressed in blue and cream striped trousers and green top, with a black hat, she in a cream open robe with green underskirt, seed pearl and coral appliqué necklace to the bodice, surrounded by foliate motifs, butterflies, framed and glazed to front and back, revealing the wonderful designs to the reverse, 24cm by 15cm (actual size of panel)

Provenance: From the Estate of The Late Josephine Orskey

Footnote; Many thanks to Dr V Anker for her thoughts on this sampler.  Probably made by two hands, with the original stitcher being more accomplished, than the later stitcher. It possibly made its way to England after the Restoration in 1660, or the Glorious Revolution 1688, as the use of silver thread is primarily an English trait.  It has then been reworked, possibly for a larger needlework or stump work.

Sold for £2,700
Estimated at £500 - £800

. Discolouration to the backing cloth, mainly to the edges and top. Small holes to the top edge and corners, couple of smaller ones by the lady's skirt. Slight fading and wear overall. Part of large pieces. Costumes to front are appliquéd on. His nose appears to be missing. Red outline appears to be worn to blue floral motif/flower near the top. Couple of tiny areas of pin head sized holes/loose weave. Reverse - mounted with a layer of fine gauze, colours bright and stitched good. Couple of small chips/wear to the frame.
