A Fine and Rare James II Ebony Veneered Table Timepiece with Pull Quarter Repeat and Alarm, signed Johannes Knibb, Oxon Fecit, circa 1685, case with foliate gilt brass handle and foliate cast gilt metal mounts, glazed side viewing windows and holes for pull repeat cords, front door with winged cherub escutcheons, 6-1/2-inch brass dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, signed on the dial plate below 6 o'clock Johannes Knibb Oxon Fecit, N/S lever above 12 o'clock, winged cherub spandrels, finely matted dial centre with date aperture and central silvered alarm disc, finely pierced blued steel hands, single fusee movement with verge escapement, five latched vase shaped pillars and latches to the dial feet, pull quarter repeat on two bells and a further bell for alarm striking, movement backplate with profuse foliate engraving and signed within a central scrolled cartouche Johannes Knibb Oxon Fecit, front plate with the earliest type of quarter repeating mechanism, bob pendulum, 35cm to the top of the handle

This early table clock appears to have, on the front plate, one of the earliest forms of quarter repeating work. A similar clock, and quarter repeating work examples, are illustrated in (Dawson (Percy G), Drover (CB) and Parkes (DW) Early English Clocks, pg 344 and 640.

John Knibb (1650-1722) was a member of the famous Knibb family of clockmakers, and was the younger brother of Joseph Knibb (1640-1721). John worked as apprentice to Joseph in Oxford c.1664 and they were clockmakers to Kings Charles II and James II. When Joseph later moved to London, John took charge of the Oxford business and received the Freedom of the City in 1673. In 1700 he was made the Mayor of Oxford. He made many fine and complicated examples on his own, as well as with Joseph. Examples of his work are in collections such as the Wertherfield Collection and the Guildhall Museum.

04.05.11, Case with the ebony veneer having small cracks in places, gilt metal mounts are rubbed to the surfaces, top corners with holes plugged for the finials (all finials are now missing, front door with the lock not working properly at present and not closing correctly, front door appears to have had a later replaced glass panel inserted of a wooden fret work panel, right hand side glazed panel with a minor chip to the top right hand side of the glass, dial appears clean, movement looks clean and in working order, verge escapement possibly has had repair at some time due two minor vacant pivot holes to the back plate and three minor vacant pivot holes to the front plate, back cock appears to have been replaced at some time, bells have been replaced, one repeat cord has broken and the other cord has shortened, pull repeat is working and also the alarm is working.
