Publishing Trade; Edwards, Marilyn
An archive of material relating to the publishing trade, collected by Marilyn Dugdale, nee Moorhouse, nee Edwards, especially Jonathan Cape, for whom she worked between 1974-82 as Publicity Director.

Marilyn Edwards worked in the book trade for almost 40 years at some of the biggest names in the business. She worked particularly in copy editing, publicity and sales for the Publishers Association, the National Book League (administering the Booker Prize), Jonathan Cape, Allen and Unwin, and finally Random House. During her time, she represented authors, politicians, historians, and humourists with names such as Martin Amis, Tony Benn, and Sebastian Faulks amongst those indebted to her help. She finally put her own pen to paper after retirement to the North of England, publishing The Cats of Moon Cottage series and two other novels for children.

The lot includes a various material from her work in the publishing trade, such as a large selection of Jonathan Cape publication catalogues on various subjects and 12 uncorrected publisher's proofs - including Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Peter Hoeg and Salman Rushdie. There is also additional material such as a typescript of David Holloway's Lewis and Clark and the confidential Report by the Working Party set up by a Conference on the Obscenity Laws convened by the Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain, 1969. The companies are further represented by the letters from their directors, such as Martyn Goff, Andre Deutsch, and Tom Maschler of Cape, who sent her a copy of his autobiography (included here) with the hope he came 'somewhere close to doing our years together justice.' The affection in which she was held by authors and colleagues alike, is shown by letters on her retirement from Cape from authors like Nadine Gordimer and John Fowles (who record their selfish upset at Marilyn's departure) and Quentin Blake (who hopes getting to North Yorkshire to see her would not be too hard). A part record of a life spent devoted to books.
