Harris was a publisher of children's books whose big innovation was to eschew the traditional didacticism associated with chldren's works and instead produce fun, whimsical and amusing books. He worked for a short time with John Murray before joining John Newbery. Harris would later take over the firm in 1801. This was not the first book to embrace playfulness, and Harris noticed such things paid much better than Evangelising. 1805 saw the first issue of The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog, Harris first big break with Newbery's more traditional offerings. Marjorie Moon claimed, 'this is probably the most significant children's book JH ever published.'
