Taxidermy: A Very Rare Late Victorian Cased Pair of Goshawks and a Rough-Legged Buzzard, 1835-1912

Taxidermy: A Very Rare Late Victorian Cased Pair of Goshawks and a Rough-Legged Buzzard, 1835-1912, by James Birch Waters (from London), Naturalist, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, a fantastic quality diorama case of a pair of full mount adult Goshawks male and female, the male perched upon a lichen encrusted branch with left foot raised, the female below in crouched position, stood upon pebble covered large painted faux rocks, the Rough-Legged Buzzard perched atop a lichen and moss covered faux rock with head turning sharply to the left, all mounted amidst thistles, brush and fauna, set against a water colour painted evening sky back board, enclosed within a large six-glass table display case with ebonised frame, raised upon a moulded and gilt base, 68.5cm by 30.5cm by 96.5cm, taxidermist's small paper trade label to interior lower left. Very little is known about this extremely competent artist and few examples of his work have been recorded, his trade labels within the case usually say 'from London'. It isn't known where J.B. Waters trained but the groundwork within the cases bears a similar resemblance to cases by T.M. Williams and Henry Ward.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
