Alfred Wallis (1855-1942)
Fishing boats off a Cornish coastline
Signed, oil on board, 28cm by 58cm

The work is painted on a Great Western Railway advertisement card

English painter, fisherman and scrap merchant, started painting in 1922 when his wife died. In 1928 Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson discovered Wallis in St Ives.

Sold for £65,000
Estimated at £50,000 - £60,000

The work is produced onto a Great Western Railway advertisement card. There are creases and damages to the card in places, this is particularly noticeable in the sky in the upper right corner and upper left corner, the right corner having an angular crease mark or tear which extends in one direction for 6.5cm and in the other for 4.5cm. There are also further crease marks in this same area in the left upper corner, the tear measures 2-2.5cm. There are further crease marks, scuff marks stains and further dirt to the board surface, this is noticeable more in sky than in the sailing ships or sea. The oil paint is quite thickly applied particularly in the sea and there are cracks appearing in places and as well as the stains and dirt there is surface dirt across the oil surface. It is contained within a grey coloured mount and plain outer oak wooden frame, under glass. The reverse of the work is also glazed showing quite a number of crease marks, tear, scuff marks and further damages to the advertisement side of the board (090311)
