Judaica: A Mid-18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the gorge with figures. The double painted leaf shows the Triumph of Mordecai from the Book of Esther in the Hebrew bible. A plot against the king was revealed and foiled by Mordecai, (the Queen's cousin), hated by Haman as Mordecai refused to acknowledge his status. The king, wishing to reward him, asked advice of Haman, who by then wished to plot against and kill all exiled Jews throughout the Persian Empire (this plot was also foiled when Queen Esther begged the King to prevent it). Haman mistakenly believed it was he who was being rewarded, and suggested a celebratory procession through the city so that the people could acknowledge the act. So Mordecai, a Jew, was led though the city in fine clothes and astride a white horse. Haman was ultimately executed on the gallows which he had erected for Mordecai. Verso painted with rural scene of stone bridge crossing river, abbey or castle in distance. Contained in a cream card fan box bearing a label for A Rodien inside the lid.
Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm.
