A Fine and Rare Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, the gorge with detailed

A Fine and Rare Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, the gorge with detailed carving of horsemen and foot soldiers and mythical scaled beasts, the central carving with a classical depiction of Coriolanus. The head has a large circular cavity, currently empty, probably meant for either a spyglass or a watch. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, is painted with a dramatic and detailed scene of Troy with Hector, Andromache and their son, the reserves finely painted with flowers against a dark background, embellished with slivers of straw and mother-of-pearl. The recto is painted centrally with a family relaxing outdoors, a piper playing, flowers gathered, the reserves again painted with flowers with the addition of moths, some of which have feathers applied to their wings.

Previously sold at Christie's SK on October 11th 1994, lot 128. Estimated at £2000.00 to £3000 it achieved £4200.00 hammer
