A Rare 18th Century Ivory Fan, set in the upper guards with a thermometer and a hygrometer,...

A Rare 18th Century Ivory Fan, set in the upper guards with a thermometer and a hygrometer, these sections also containing carved cherubs and Masonic or scientific symbols, and backed with red foil. The gorge sticks are lightly carved and pierced with a central vase of flowers and more regular designs to the sides. The upper guard holds the thermometer, the words "Thermometre, Chaud, Tempere, Froid and Grand froid" written in French at descending intervals. The hygrometer, set in the lower guard, is marked as such at the top. Part of the front cover is lacking. The double paper leaf is painted with a Chinese family surrounded by household items and indoor plants, contained in traditional painted pots, the flower petals and bamboo leaves of applied straw. The gentleman to the left with hat and long moustache carries a fixed fan applied with a brown feather. The child in the group to the right carries another similar. The verso is painted with simple flowers in pastel colours.

. Generally good, some nicks to the leaf folds and possible restoration to two folds, see from the verso with slight crumpling to the recto.
