El Dos de Mayo 1808: A Rare and Unusual Fan, depicting the defence of Madrid by the citizens...

El Dos de Mayo 1808: A Rare and Unusual Fan, depicting the defence of Madrid by the citizens against the French on the second of May 1808, when Officers Luis Daoiz and Pedro Verlarde died defending the Parque de la Artilleria Monteleon. Napoleon had entered into an alliance with King Carlos IV and under the auspices of crossing Spain to attack Portugal he left a quantity of his troops in Spanish towns. He then forced the King to abdicate and installed his son in his place. The capital was occupied by French troops. The verso of this fan states 2 EL DOS DE MAYO 1808, EN MADRID Muren Daviz y Velarde defendiendo el Parque de Artilleria". The recto of the double paper leaf shows bloodshed on the streets of Madrid, with numerous French soldiers, their flag flying, being confronted by a handful of citizens armed only with a canon, and basic weapons. The hand coloured aquatint, published by Behrmann and Collmann, London, on December 15th 1813, is mounted on wooden sticks lacquered in black and painted in gold.
Guard length 11 inches or 28cm
