A Victorian Parcel-Gilt Silver Bowl and Spoon, Glasgow, 1873, The Bowl by Edward and Sons, The Spoon With Differing Indistinct Maker's Mark, the bowl tapering and cast and chased with panels depicting the signs of the zodiac and deities, surrounded by foliage scrolls, the bowl engraved 'To William Neilson from Grandpapa Neilson 1873', the spoon engraved with initials 'WN', the bowl 12cm diam., 11oz (2)

Provenance:
It is possible that the present bowl and spoon were a christening present to William Neilson, the Scottish rugby player and later Barrister. Born near Glasgow on 18 August 1873 Neilson played rugby first for Merchiston and later Clare College, Cambridge before going on to play international rugby for Scotland. He was to become president of the Scottish Rugby Union in 1905 and served in the Highland Light Infantry in World War II.

. The bowl is marked underneath and the spoon on back of handle. The bowl further engraved with design registration diamond. The bowl is lacking maker's mark but engraved 'Edward & Sons', The marks on the bowl are clear. The marks on the spoon have some wear. There is overall some surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The parcel-gilding on the is somewhat pale.
