The New Gypsy Fan: A Late 18th Century Printed Fortune Telling Fan, the double paper leaf...

The New Gypsy Fan: A Late 18th Century Printed Fortune Telling Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on relatively plain bone, with some shaping to the lower gorge. Along the top border the fan is divided into 12 sections marked with the month and the name of the signs of the zodiac. Further divisions on the fan leaf divide these signs into those being "Earthy", Fiery", "Airy" and "Watry" and lists the characteristics of those born under these signs. In the centre of the leaf, a large oval is entitled "The Explanation". This advises the user to first take a pack of cards and shuffle them, and ends with "draw your own conclusions". The rest of the leaf is covered in words relating to different attributes which may be indicated by the hearts/diamonds/spades and clubs also seen at the top of the fan. The verso is plain.
Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm

There are several versions of The New Gypsy Fan, produced in the 18th century. There are three in the Schreiber Collection, but not this example

Sold for £450
Estimated at £350 - £500

. The grain in the bone is particularly evident. Some nicks to the top of some folds. Other folds are partly split and some old restoration is evident from the verso, resulting in a reasonably strong leaf but quite discoloured on that side. The lower guard has a tiny hole at the very top corner. At both sides of the leaf, outer edges, there is some evidence of repair which may have resulted in the loss of symbols or numbers, as other variations of this leaf do seem to have these extras. There may have been something printed but the area is now plain.
