. In fully restored condition. It has been relined, cleaned, restored and varnished approx 30/40+ years ago. There is evidence of a tear or scratch across the surface of the picture, this goes through the face of the sitter, his wig and into the background colour of the work. The filling and restoration of this tear is now starting to deteriorate and discolour. There is also evidence of overcleaning and restoration to the background and throughout the costume, with further evidence of other tears or holes within the costume. Again this filling and restoration are starting to discolour and deteriorate. Also the glazes in the costume and around the small palm tree in the lower right hand corner have been somewhat overcleaned and restored. There is reasonably thick impasto in places and still some evidence of dirt in areas. Some general infilling to old losses along the edges with some rubbing, minor retouching to one or two small areas of the red ribbon at the sitters neck. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Glazed.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
