A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan with a particularly ornate gorge, the monture carved and pierced...

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan with a particularly ornate gorge, the monture carved and pierced with painted panels to the upper guards. The gorge sticks are resplendent with gilding, the carving radiating from the centre, and the outermost sticks and bottom edge providing a formal border. Within this border, a large central cartouche shows a courting couple, with another couple within ovals to the reserves. Amidst this colourful painting are smaller ovals painted with rural scenes. A rectangle bottom left shows a windmill, and one to the right depicts a harbour scene. The leaf presents a gentle pastoral scene of friends and family gathering flowers in the countryside, a courting couple to the right, a child with his dog. To each side, a vignette of golden flowers on a turquoise background. The verso is painted with a similar scene, a couple resting, having gathered flowers. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm

Sold for £170
Estimated at £60 - £100

. The upper guard lacks most of the painted section, a replacement section of plain ivory having been inserted, below which the next section is broken, which is causing the guard to bend. At this point there is a tear in the leaf. The first fold in at each side has a tear to the top.
