Grand Tour Fan, circa 1776, (note date to right hand side of leaf), depicting the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius by day in the central panel and by night in the smaller panel to the right. Between these two scenes is a poem in Italian. To the left, a musical score accompanies a verse in Italian. The double skin leaf, mounted on ivory, has a trompe l'oeil design of a striped ribbon, which is repeated on the verso, surrounding a closer image of Vesuvius. The carved guards both feature the same chinoiserie figure and carving that features on the gorge. Contained in a pale pink 18th century card fan tube, onto which is written "The ??? painted with ???gold by Sir J Reynolds". Guard length 28cm

Sold for £750

. One gorge stick is loose but present, and has torn the underside of the leaf, with evidence of a previous attempt to re-secure. The undersides of both guards have a plain ivory panel, which are not matching, suggesting a period replacement to one. The leaf is generally rubbed on the folds, with tiny slits to the top of several folds, but all writing is clear. The verso is grubby, slightly foxed and rubbed, with further tiny tears.
