A South Devon Militia Medal of Merit 1799, the obverse with a trophy of arms enclosed by a wreath, with circumscription, 'TO THE SOUTH DEVON MILITIA IN TESTIMONY OF MERIT 1799', the reverse with the Arms of Waterford, 31mm, with a small oval ring suspender, the reverse showing signs of brooching.

Footnote:-The South Devon Militia were stationed in Waterford, Ireland from 1798-1799 at the time of the Irish Rebellion.
In 1798 they effectively contained the uprising within the city, unlike other areas which suffered greatly in the unrest. Following this, the Freedom of the City was presented to the Colonel of the regiment, and certain selected members of the regiment were awarded this specially struck medal. It is not known exactly how many medals were struck in total, but very few have survived.

Sold for £320
Estimated at £150 - £200

. The reverse has two areas where a pin brooch fitting has previously been afixed
