A White Metal Mounted Saltglaze Stoneware Yeovil Riot Jug, circa 1831, moulded with the Royal arms, trophies, agricultural implements, fruiting vine and oak branches, applied with a shield shaped presentation plaque inscribed PRESENTED BY THE Inhabitants of Yeovil & its vicinity in testimony of their approval of the conduct of the MUDFORD TROOP OF YEOMANRY CAVALRY during the Riots of that TOWN in 1831 TO QUARTER MASTER GENGE, 25cm high See illustration

A riot jug was awarded to all members of the Mudford Yeomanry Cavalry for their "manly and forbearing character" in facing and forcibly dispersing the crowd during the October 1831 riot, though it is recorded that the worst injury incurred on the day was when one of the yeomanry shot himself in the leg
