Two 19th Century Ivory Fans with unusual montures, the first with a narrow leaf thus a smaller upper guard, this being carved with a classical urn, and silvered. The lower guards and gorge widening at the shoulder and descending with roundels at each side of a central V, some gilded, some silvered, tapering into a single row of slightly larger roundels until meeting the head. Shaped white metal loop. The narrow black gauze leaf, embroidered with sequins, is edged with black "blonde" handmade bobbin lace. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan with interesting monture, skeleton to the gorge, guards wedge-shaped with wide tips, the upper section carved with flowers and a cherub within a sloping frame. The lower guard sections are carved with more such frames, these enclosing different features such as a bird or a ladybird. The gorge sticks, of differing widths, either continue the "frame" design or alternate with flowers, with traces of gilding. The double paper leaf is divided into sections, three of which are painted. The central cartouche depicts a lady and her suitor who appears to be carrying a set of bagpipes. To each side, smaller vignettes feature a lady in a rural setting, or a man in similar surroundings. In between, panels painted with pale blue backgrounds feature delicate flowers or appliqués of coloured foil. All sections are bordered in gold, with an exterior background in dull turquoise finished with gold. The verso is painted more crudely with a landscape, and a larger version of the lady in the vignette to the right of the recto. Contained in a card fan box with glazed green paper to the exterior, the inside lid with paper label for Duvelleroy, the name printed on a folding fan, and the addresses for London at 167 Regent Street and Paris, at 17 Passage des Panoramas. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm (2)

Sold for £190
Estimated at £100 - £200

. For the first fan, note wear to the black gauze. One gorge stick has been repaired from the mid-point to the tip. Another three are in need of similar restoration. The silvering is now dull, whereas a lot of the gilded roundels are still bright. Fan 2 has a grey look to the monture but this might simply be that it needs extensive cleaning. One gorge stick is broken with a section missing. Some of the foil appliqués are missing from the leaf. The box lacks one end. The label is clean.
