An Early 19th Century Tortoiseshell Brisé Fan, barrel head, the twenty inner sticks and two guards

An Early 19th Century Tortoiseshell Brisé Fan, barrel head, the twenty inner sticks and two guards all with pointed tips. The recto is intricately and vibrantly painted in gold in chinoiserie fashion, showing a large palace to the left, two figures visible in the tower, and perhaps a small animal on the roof. One man smokes a pipe on the terrace whilst another throws a rope to a small boat crossing the water. On the other bank another grand pagoda is facing the scene. Within this cartouche, the sky is filled with birds in flight, and stylised trees. The reserves are painted with tiny stars within a formal border, and in the lower gorge. The stick tips and upper gorge areas feature quite classical arches and trellis. Black silk ribbon. The verso is also painted, with a single figure amidst vegetation, and a large bird. Guard length 6.25 inches or 15.5cm.

Sold for £500
Estimated at £200 - £300

. Generally, very good, save for some rubbing to the paint in places. The paint on the verso is dull.
