A Large 19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan with carved ivory monture, and fitted box. The guards are

A Large 19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan with carved ivory monture, and fitted box. The guards are deeply carved, the gorge sticks less so. The double paper leaf shows scenes of leisure and social gatherings, some with indoor water features, the figures dressed in applied silk robes, with applied painted ivory faces. Fitted with a slim double silk tassel in ruby and lilac. The fitted fan box is lined in blue, the inner lid with silk panel painted with vibrant peonies, butterflies and soft fruits, with a central label for "Sunshing, Hong Kong". The black lacquer box, shaped, is painted in gold with foliage to the sides, and people and shrubs in the outdoors. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm. Together with Another Carved Ivory Fan, similar, but fitted with a much later European replacement leaf with Japanese designs. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Much Later Chinese Fan, the gauze leaf embroidered with flowers in white, with two birds and a butterfly approaching. Guard length approx. 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (3)

. The monture is clean and sound. The folds are rubbed in places and some short splits are noted to the top border. The box is a little battered, with many chips to the lacquer, and the hinges are defective. The catch does however work. The second fan has a broken guard, section present. The leaf is defective and damaged. The third fan has a break at the bottom of one guard and a section of one gorge stick, although present, has broken away.
