Taxidermy: Indian Hog Deer (Axis porcinus), circa 1887, an adult male head mount looking straight ahead, from the wall 36cm, height 66cm, mounted upon a typical polished oak double shield, bearing incorrect copper shield - ''Red Deer, Forest of Bielowegskia, European Russia, Aug 6th 1879, A.H.P'' The Indian hog deer (Hyelaphus porcinus) is a small deer native to the Indo-Gangetic Plain in Pakistan, northern India, Nepal, Bangladesh to mainland Southeast Asia. It also occurs in western Thailand and southwestern Yunnan Province in China. It gets its name from the hog-like manner in which it runs through the forests (with its head hung low), to ease ducking under obstacles instead of leaping over them, like most other deer.
